Are Apple Pencils Required to use iAnnotate?

An Apple Pencil is NOT required to use iAnnotate, however it can add to your iAnnotate experience.  In case you decide to add an Apple Pencil to your device setup, we’ve got you covered with a few best practices.

You can use your finger for any of the tools in iAnnotate or a generic stylus. Should you opt for a stylus, we do recommend an Apple Pencil as it has the greatest compatibility with iOS devices. In case you’re already using an Apple Pencil with other apps, here are a few tips and settings you can use in iAnnotate with your Apple Pencil.

Two Ways to Use Apple Pencil in iAnnotate

We have two use settings when using an Apple Pencil.

1. The Apple Pencil can be used to "always ink", so that it always acts like a pencil and adds markings when touched to a page without having to select the pencil tool from the toolbar.

2. The Apple Pencil can be used as a general tool that allows scrolling, etc. rather than marking the page by default.

By default, the Apple Pencil is set to "Apple Pencil Always Inks," which means the Apple Pencil will automatically annotate when you use it.

To use tools other than the pencil, you can select the tool from the toolbar by tapping with your Apple pencil or finger. You can then use your finger or Apple pencil to use the annotation tool chosen on your page.

If you prefer to scroll/navigate with the Apple Pencil instead of having it act as a pencil, you can disable the "Apple Pencil Always Inks" setting. Follow the steps below to make this adjustment.

Turn Off/ On "Apple Pencil Always Inks":

  1. From iAnnotate document view, tap the "+" in the top left corner
  2. Tap the gear icon in the top right corner
  3. Tap "App Settings". This will bring you to the iOS native “Settings” app.
  4. Tap "Annotation"
  5. Turn "Apple Pencil Always Inks" off (appears as grey and toggled to the left) or on (appears green and toggled to the right)
